New Sign Regulations

For Sale Signs

In March of 2021, the City Council held a study session on the placement of temporary signage in the public right-of-way (PROW). Temporary signage in the PROW typically includes but is not limited to garage sales, real estate, and election signs. As a result of the study session, the Council directed staff to bring an Ordinance that prohibits temporary signage on election years in the PROW, for ten weeks prior to a November election.

In December 2021, the La Palma City Council amended the Municipal Code to ensure that all provisions of the new sign Ordinance are legally defensible and consistent with State and Federal Laws. A temporary sign on public PROW is not required to obtain a permit but must comply with standards pertaining to duration, size, and location.

  • A temporary sign can be displayed a maximum of 63 days a year and must be removed 10 days following the event advertised.
  • Temporary signs are not permitted between September 1 and November 10 in the PROW in years when an election is held.
  • Temporary signs in the PROW are restricted to no more than 3 feet above the ground and no bigger than 6 square feet in size.
  • A temporary sign in the PROW is prohibited on all street median strips, center dividers, roadway islands, and safety zones.

For questions regarding temporary signage in the PROW, please contact the Community Development Department at 714-690-3340.
